OH MY GOD! WAAAAAAHHHH!!!
After 32 years of bringing together America and Japan's favorite videogame mascot characters that have since gone on to become the face of Nintendo gaming for nearly four decades, the man responsible for voicing him Charles Martinet is not voicing the characterss anymore.
Martinet made his first role with the Mushroom Kingdom in the Nintendo 64 port of the original 1985 game, nappropiately named Super Mario Bros. 64 which released back in 1991, although Mario originally got his first voiceover role in DHX Media/WildBrain-owned Dic Entertainment's The Super Mario Bros. SUper Show! released two years prior to that in 1989 and has been bringing the plummer's iconic memes to millions of gamers across the globe ever since.
Charles would later go on to voice Dr. Seuss mascot THe Cat in the Hat in the Creative Wonders, The Learning Company and Broderbund Software's Dr. Seuss Toddler-Kindergarten CD-ROM games released in 1999, just a few months short of the CW gaming company getting shutdown for good by TLC.
But now with the Italian plummer at age 68, Charles can't take it anymore. And off the heels of the successful 1.3 billion-dollar grossing movie adaptation that released over thee Easter holidays, it seems as the man who brought Nintendo to new life in the first place can no longer stand. After much speculation in the past few months, Nintendo has confirmed that Martinet will not be continuing to reprise his iconic roles with the newest Mario installment Super Mario Bros. Wonders coming out later this fall and instead will be replaced by a new voice actor who won't be revealed until the game's end credits.
But fear not, just because Charles is quitting voicing the SMB Mushroom Kingdom characters doesn't mean that he's gone from the franchise forever, as Charles will continue to work at Nintendo and serve the franchise of games that he's been known for after all these years, moving on to Nintendo's newly created job field of Mario Ambassador, where Martinet will continue to interact with his fans and promote the newer games in the seres that will continue to roll out in 2024 and beyond.
So as Martinet prepares for retirement in the voiceover field, let's all give an earraping amount of applause and gratitude to this legendary Japanese man who has brought his iconic voice, wisdom, charm and optimism to one of, if not THE greatest videogame franchise and company of all time.
Thank you to Charles Martinet for all his years of iconic voice lines and giving us one of the best videogame series that has stood the test of time and will continue to expand for years to come. We will miss you dearly and wish you all the best in your near future.
